Artist: Geraldine M Ysselstein

Name: “I ASKED” (2023)

Material: Fibre weaving with wool.

Background: In the summer of 2023, I took a month to go camping to be with my family together outdoors. Spending sustained time outside made me pay more attention to all the elements. It also gave me space to think about, what is my purpose? I spent four weeks listening and acknowledging that the land, sky, animals, and waters are already doing what I hope to do. And sometimes I need to step back and let them do what they need to.

“I ASKED”
Geraldine M Ysselstein (2023)

I asked the land, sky, animals, and waters:
What is my purpose? What am I here to do?

The water answered first,
“Breathe. We are moving”

The land said,
“Walk gently. We are arriving.”

The sky said,
“Focus on creativity. We are creating.”

The birds said,
“Be quiet and listen. We are coming.”

The rocks said,
“Trust your relationships. We are opening.”

The trees said,
“Be tall and strong. We are standing“
